Thom says: “This is the debut film from director Edwards and his love for the project is evident throughout this pastoral work. It takes place in 1817 in Indiana where the young Abe Lincoln is growing up over a 3-year period in rural, hard-living, troubled times. We see the hardships & tragedy that sets his life and we see the two women who influenced & guided him towards greatness. While the black & white photography is of spectacular high quality creating a DAYS OF HEAVEN type sight sensibility, it’s quite easy to get lost in the beauty of it all. But rather than add to the secular, sequestered look of the film the actuality of Abraham Lincoln being the reason for the film gets in the way of what I was watching. Perhaps if I’d seen the film without knowing who it was about might have changed my reaction, but then other that the gorgeous photography nothing much interesting really happens. Actor Marling far more memorable here, where she portrays Nancy Hanks, than in the film I saw last night that featured her, I ORIGINS. 3 cats”
