Thom says: “This is an unusually well-made horror film that is positively horrifying, and definitely nor for the feint-of-heart. If graphic horror films leave you repulsed or disturbed don’t see this shocker. In the prologue of the film a 6-year-old Martin is kidnapped in front of his home by a sociopath with a total lack of conscience. The kicker is that the boy has some rare disorder that makes him unable to feel pain. Why he’s in front of the house alone considering his fragility isn’t worth thinking about because logic isn’t this film’s strong suit. Taken back to the madman’s hideaway he’s forced to do the bidding of his fanatical
subjugator. Fast forward 6 years and an orphan teen-age girl Allison (Daddario) comes to live with a family in the vicinity of the satanic stalker. We learn that the remote area has had a long history of disappearing girls who we find out have been incarcerated by our sick psycho and eventually tortured to death in deviant, monstrous ways. The fearful dread that permeates the film lets us know that her likelihood of being entrapped are very high. Don’t ask why she continually goes out jogging on the bleak, remote country roads alone. What raises the bar on this near classic is an unbearable sense of doom that continues to grow as the film progresses. The acting is way above normal for the genre & Biehn stands out as the pure evil maniac. He prays to some weird god-like sculpture that is not explained but it fits. Don’t expect a lot of survivors by movie’s end. 4 1/2 cats
