Diane says: “My 4th film ‘at’ Sundance.
I’m thinking that maybe it wasn’t a good idea for Alice Englert (daughter of our esteemed Jane Campion) to go all in as writer, director, co-lead, and composer of this mother-daughter-themed film.
“Jennifer Connolly, nailing an Olive Oyl look, plays unhappy mother Lucy, attending a retreat in Oregon led by guru Elon (Ben Wishaw of WOMEN TALKING). Oh, that’s why Teslas abound! Meanwhile, daughter Dylan is in New Zealand, working as a stuntwoman in a hobbity kind of movie. Will the role play each of them takes on help them break through to their real-life needs? Will Lucy get thru the retreat without killing the pretty young influencer that everyone adores?
“Connelly’s character is great. There are some wacko comedic moments à la LOBSTER or BANSHEES. The final act public defender (Karan Gill) revives the story’s momentum. But there is too much fat here, and New Zealand can’t stand in for Oregon. 2 cats.”
