Thom says: “It’s post-WWII Hamburg where a colonel is there with his family to help with Reconstruction and they move into a house still populated by the German owner and his shy daughter. Of course, the British colonel and his lovely, sensuous wife (Keira Knightly at her glamorous best) have nothing but understandably intense loathing for the hated dead Hitler & throw his name out mercilessly at the beleaguered German gentleman (Stephen) (a mesmerizing Alexander Skarsgard) and the hatred between the wife and Stephen rises to such a force that it comes as no surprise when they fall deeply, wickedly in love and she gives serious thought to leaving her decent but ineffectual husband (an interesting performance from Clarke). That the noted romance is effecting doesn’t discount that the story takes place during a period of time in which I’d die happy if I never had to see another Nazi-dominated script. Kent was also responsible for the rather more interesting TESTAMENT OF YOUTH.”

Julie says: “I give this 4 cats. I liked it except for the ending which I have mixed feelings on.  I will nominate this for production design and Skarsgard and Knightley give great perfs.  Clarke is not bad either. Much good music in this as well. Below review tells way too much. I wouldn’t read it till after you see the movie.”
