For some 23 years now he has consistently gone the extra mile to make extravagant rich entertainments that are delightfully complex and visually delicious. ACCION MUTANTE (1993), THE DAY OF THE BEAST (1995), DANCE WITH THE DEVIL (1997), DYING OF LAUGHTER (1999), THE PERFECT CRIME (2004), THE LAST CIRCUS (2010), AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT (2011), & WITCHING & BITCHING (2013) are all fantastic examples of his wacky oeuvre. Here’s a Spanish director that wants to thrill & excite.
“MY BIG NIGHT is more of a straight comedy than most of de la Iglesia’s films and it’s really uproarious from beginning to end. A major television network is filming its New Year’s Eve extravaganza with major stars all coming with heavy baggage. Outside the studio a riot erupts. As tempers and egos flare the film is a miracle menagerie of madness. The film continually threatens to explode with the wild technique of exaggerated drama & inspired silliness. I did get the idea that if one was Spanish they’d get even more out of the film as apparently real characters are satirized and events in current Spanish society are mirrored through the madcap scenario. Full marks for this marvelous example of Latin flavor.”
