Val says: “I can’t say enough about DOROTHY. I actually can’t because the midway point features a huge spoiler which will ruin your experience of the film if I reveal it. I can tell you that it defies genres and structure, and can feel disorienting in style of only because director Karthik Subbaraj is attempting to keep it in the mainstream commercial appeal to get it in as many Cineplexes across India as possible. Subbaraj is a relatively well-known filmmaker in India; many of his previous films are gangster, action-type flicks. This one carries the spirit of those films, one of the characters’ love of Bruce Lee being a touching throughline, but doesn’t stay there. The script is a feast for the cast, especially the two main characters, who can bring their full range to the roles. I found the film exhilarating, moving, hilarious, horrific, and terrible in all the right places, though part of me wonders whether choosing a stylistic lane might have made it a better film. But then the other part of me roundhouse kicks the first part and insists it’s perfect as is. (See the film!!) Both parts of me agree that it got a bit silly in scenes where it shouldnt have, but it’s still a 5 cat film for me. The descriptions and trailer didn’t do it justice, so just imagine me gently holding your face in my hands, looking into your eyes and telling you to GO SEE DOROTHY!”
