Chlotrudis members are very excited for the return of in-person film festivals, and the Independent Film Festival Boston is one of our favorites, and a great partner for our organization. This year’s festival boasts some really great films, and a particularly strong collection of new docs that are sure to please the many Chlotrudis members who attend. Among the films of interest to Chlotrudis members are BOTH SIDES OF THE BLADE, the latest work by Trudy-winning director Claire Denis; ONE SECOND, directed by master director Zhang Yimou; provocative, Trudy-nominated director Peter Strickland’s latest work FLUX GOURMET, and the intriguing documentary, THE PEZ OUTLAW directed by Amy Bandlien Storkel and Bryan Storkel. We are also thrilled with the inclusion of GIRL TALK, the latest doc by long-time Chlotrudis friend and honoree, Lucia Small, whose debut work, MY FATHER, THE GENIUS was a Chlotrudis-nominated doc.
Chlotrudis has selected two films to co-present at the Festival this year, and we hope you will check them out. Screening at the Brattle Theater on Saturday, April 30, 6pm, is Margaret Brown’s documentary, DESCENDANT. Winner of the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award: Creative Vision at Sundance FIlm Festival, Brown’s fourth documentary explores the history around the Africatown residents in Mobile, Alabama, that was founded by enslaved ancestors who were transported in 1860 aboard the last known and illegal slave ship, Clotilda. The recent discovery of this shipwreck offers this community a tangible link to their ancestors and validation of a history so many tried to bury. Brown’s second doc, THE ORDER OF MYTHS was the Chlotrudis Best Documentary winner in 2009.
Another film Chlotrudis is supporting at the IFFBoston is the debut film by Max Walker-Silverman, whose gentle story of long-separated lovers in rural West. Dale Dickey, whose work in such films as WINTER’S BONE, LEAVE NO TRACE, and WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD earned her an award for her Career-So-Far. Chlotrudis honored Dale at their 20th Awards Ceremony in 2014. Dickey co-stars with Oscar-winner West Studi in A LOVE SONG, screening on Thursday, April 28, 7:15pm at the Somerville Theatre.
