Michael says: “Jin, a Korean book translator, is called to Columbus, Indiana, where his father, a famous scholar of architecture on a speaking tour, has suffered a stroke, or some other debilitating ailment. He resents that he needs to stay with his father during a recovery period that is uncertain and put his life on hold when his father never seemingly did anything like that for him. While there, he meets a young woman working at a library, Casey, not long out of high school, but with no other ambitions than to remain in her hometown and take care of her mother, who is a former addict and is struggling to get her life back together. Casey also happens to be an architecture geek, and there is anything she longs for, it is to become a tour guide for the modernist buildings that Columbus, IN is known for. Despite their differences, and the two nearly opposite takes on parental relationship they each hold, the two become friends and pass their time together.

“While Kogonada picked up two Chlotrudis nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay it was his cinematographer, Elisha Christian who took home a Trudy. The visual composition of COLUMBUS is striking, enhancing the architectural subject matter that drives the plot. Nearly every scene is carefully framed with clean lines, repetitive patterns, and stark contrasts. Korean-born, but raised in Louisville, KY, it seems likely that there are some autobiographical elements to COLUMBUS, but Kogonada uses an alias, and tries to keep his identity unknown. I don’t know why I didn’t watch this film during it’s eligibility year, not even after it earned three nominations. Had I, I surely would have campaigned for it even harder. It’s exactly my kind of movie. In addition to strong performances by John Cho (HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE, STAR TREK, TIGERTAIL) and Haley Lu Richardson (SUPPORT THE GIRLS), Parker Posey (most indie films since the mid-90’s), Michelle Forbes (Star Trek: The Next Generation). and Rory Culkin (YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, IGBY GOES DOWN) provide some great support. 5 cats
