Michael says: “The Canadian film YOUNG PEOPLE FUCKING (which Netflix has so coyly renamed YPF) won the award for Best First Feature at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival. While it raised some eyebrows with its storyline of 4 couples and one trio having sex, it’s actually surprisingly formulaic and somewhat unshocking. In fact, it felt to me like a sitcom version of a sex and relationships textbook. From the couple who find their sex life growing boring, to the best friends who want to have sex just to get off, but turn out to actually be in love with each other, there aren’t many surprises here. Unsurprisingly, we have an attractive, young cast in various states of undress, and an occasional (and for the most part expected) twist in the plot from time to time.
“This isn’t to say that YOUNG PEOPLE FUCKING isn’t a fairly entertaining film. There are some fairly amusing moments, and most of the cast is pretty appealing… although some of the acting is pretty broad. Ultimately, this film feels like a mainstream, suburban SHORTBUS, which might have lacked a very interesting screenplay, but had a whole lot of heart… which is something I don’t get a lot out of YOUNG PEOPLE FUCKING. 2 ½ cats”
