Chris says: “Although never a celebrity like Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael was arguably the most influential film critic of her time and easily one of the more outspoken ones. Her unique career trajectory, from running a Berkeley moviehouse to landing at the New Yorker in her ‘50s certainly merits a feature-length portrait; while fellow critics and the most fervent film buffs will be satiated, it’s difficult to imagine casual observers being drawn in too far. Director Rob Garver’s utilization of tons of curated film clips sprinkled among the usual archival footage is fizzy and fun, but often a little on the nose—I can only imagine how deeper and more illuminating a Kael doc from someone like Mark Cousins (THE STORY OF FILM) would be.” 3.5 cats
