Chris says: “What I liked most about director Trey Edward Shults’ first feature KRISHA wasn’t so much the unique narrative structure, anxiety-stoking soundtrack or swooping camera movements but the lead performance by his own aunt, Krisha Fairchild, for it gave the film a necessary foundation and a sense of purpose. His third feature (I haven’t seen the second, IT COMES AT NIGHT) unfortunately doesn’t fully have a Krisha-like character at its center (although Fairchild does appear in a small role); without one, Shults’ audio-visual assault on the senses threatens to overwhelm.

“Still, I can’t write off WAVES that easily, because for all its flaws, its ambition and audacity also creates a depth of feeling and emotion most films aren’t foolish/risky enough to attempt. You can feel and literally see the walls closing in on Kelvin Harrison Jr.’s teen wrestling star in the film’s apprehensive first half; the second half swerves nearly in the exact opposite direction, focusing on grief, healing and redemption, with great work from Lucas Hedges (is there any kind of role he can’t pull off?) and Taylor Russell (best known as Judy Robinson from the recent LOST IN SPACE reboot). I’d rather see a filmmaker aim for the fences and nearly get there than not try at all and settle for less. More’s not always more, but WAVES takes full advantage of a wide canvas, even if it comes out a little messy in spots. 3.5 cats
