Thom says: “Over the years director Carpenter has certainly established some credibility in the B-movie category (HALLOWEEN (1978), ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE FOG (1980), THE THING (1982), STARMAN) although in the past few years his reputation has slightly faltered. Well, this piece of schlock certainly is not going to win him any credulity. Young, gorgeous, troubled Kristen (Heard) is thrust into an asylum with other distressed girls and questionable caregivers. It soon becomes apparent that the haven is more of a prison than a hospital, and even worse some of the girls begin to disappear, and, oh, there’s a very vindictive ghost running around the halls as well. Moreover, the treatments that the inmates (oops, I mean patients) receive seem more appropriate for dungeons than asylums. There’s a final twist that’s supposed to make us scream with surprise but I’d packed it in some reels earlier. Amber Heard who began her career with some promise needs to fire her agent before she descends into oblivion. Certainly, there’s a professional sheen to the proceedings but this turkey never should have been given the green light. It’s GIRL, INTERRUPTED vs. SHUTTER ISLAND. 1 1/2 cats”
