Chris says: “A considerable advance over Matthew Rankin’s previous weirdo-Canadian feature THE TWENTIETH CENTURY while also barely resembling it. Maybe the funniest, most original film I’ve seen in ages? Also, while not quite HUNDREDS OF TURKEYS, I was not expecting so many of ’em. 4.5 cats“
“(Screened at the MFA Boston; theatrical release coming soon.)”
Michael responds: “Chris’ review is spot on. I’m not quite sure what filmmaker Rankin is getting at with this absurdist, alternate reality tale, but it’s great fun, lovely to watch, and surprisingly moving as it concludes. What is it about the city of Winnipeg that inspires such out there creativity? So many delightful moments to point out, I’ll just say don’t miss this film. 4 1/2 cats“
Adam says: “Deadpan, surreal Canadian comedy that fuses Aki Kaurismäki, Hal Hartley, and Wes Anderson into something original and distinctive. Unforgettable. 4 1/2 cats“
Julie says: “Just a quick note that this is a must see. Another 5 cats for me! I agree with Michael this is one of my top movies for the year. Buried treasure or probably more? Best proddesign, use of music, use of sound, hilarious yet also poignant and with a message or two or three. The characters were just great with some funny kids, serious kids and interesting/funny well acted adult parts in many cases. Another pay attention to all the details movie that they give some big hints to, but you will only realize this and all the connections at the end (as intended!).”
