Chris says: “A stranger-than-fiction doc even *more* fun than but almost disturbing as CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS? No wonder it’s the feel-good-then-feel-bad indie hit of the summer. The first half hour or so is immensely entertaining; the increasingly wacko plot twists that follow sustain that excitement, heightening the impact as things turn tragic. However, a clear lack of resolution keeps the film from transcending its novel hook—it attempts a definitive argument at the age-old question of nature vs. nurture, but its conclusions aren’t entirely convincing or nuanced enough. 3.5 cats

Thom says: “It’s somewhat a challenge to review this ‘documentary’ because it’s just as well to say as little as possible. It’s about triplets that meet through coincidence when they are 19-years-old away at college in upstate New York but who were separated at birth and adopted by 3 different families that knew nothing about the others. This is their life -up-to-date story. By way of a shortage of original material many of the earlier and mid-time scenes are re-created for visual effect. I’ve seen that device done brilliantly at times but not really here. For such a short film too many scenes are replayed throughout the film. Scene-stealers for certain, but enough-was-enough. Strange that it’s a UK production. Also www.us.imdb only lists the actors in there-creations, and none of the other talking heads, for what purpose I wonder? 3.5 cats
