Michael says: “With the expected smart and rapid dialog from playwright Neil Simon, THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS is a lively, dark comedy about a suburban couple from Ohio who travel to New York City in the hopes of landing a big job and relocating to a more prosperous life on the east coast. Sadly, things start to go wrong from the very start and spiral upward into  a couple of days of living hell for the already uptight couple, George and Gwen Kellerman. A fogged in NYC forces there plane to Boston where they desperately grab the last train to make it to the Big Apple for George’s 9am interview. Unfortunately, all the folks diverted to Boston had the same idea, and there are no seats and no food left in the dining cabin for their grueling 4+ hour trip. Upon arrival in NYC, they are caught up in a transportation strike taking subways, buses and taxis out of the action, and by the time they make it to their hotel, they find their reservation has been given away due to their extremely late arrival, and all the hotels in town are booked. Robberies, car chases, lost children, an emotional outbursts continue throughout the night and into the morning leading to a climax that is both expected and welcome.

“Director Arthur Hiller keeps the humor and the tension high, aided wonderfully by his talented leads, Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis. Hiller had an interesting career directing such films as THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY, LOVE STORY, PLAZA SUITE, SILVER STREAK, MAKING LOVE, and OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE. While some found THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS, and Lemmon’s George Kellerman annoying, I found the interplay between Lemmon and Dennis delightful, and the ridiculous spiraling misfortune plaguing this couple to make a fun and comedic film. 4 cats
