Chris says: “BOYHOOD condensed to ninety minutes but with four different actors instead of one (because it wasn’t shot over a dozen years.) A sort of autobiography relayed in carefully chosen fragments with plainspoken-verging-on-stilted third-person narration filling in the gaps. How American culture shifted from ads for commemorative coins to political fear-mongering (or was it always like that?) in less than two decades. Long Island as a state of mind viewed through such talismans as a series of interchangeable function halls. The power of light captured and more significantly, the memory of it and how some memories carry more weight than others. A lesser film than AFTERSUN but Ricky D’Ambrose is nearly as much a director to watch as his contemporary Charlotte Wells. 4 cats
