Bruce says: “Paprika! Whoever suspected she would end up in a romantic comedy in Buenos Aires? Anna (Paprika Steen) is a football fanatic and, wearing an agent’s hat, she brokers deals between businessmen and athletes. Her current client is the hottest football player in Argentina. He is also her much younger lover. Anna deserted her husband Christian (Anders W. Berthelsen) and 16 year old son Oscar (Jamie Morton) five months ago in Denmark. When Christian is asked to sign divorce papers he decides to sign in person. He and Oscar are soon on a plane to Buenos Aires. Christian’s wine shop is slipping into bankruptcy and he is needy. His ulterior motive is to become reunited with his wife rather than divorce her.
“Oscar and Christian arrive at Anna’s address. When a hunk in a towel greets them in the courtyard, Christian mistakes him for help. Not so – he is Juan Diaz (Sebastian Estevanez), the soccer star who is Anna’s lover. He is handsome, rich, famous, young and ever so hot. He welcomes Christian and Oscar into his home. Oscar stumbles upon Juan and his mother having sex so he knows perfectly well that Anna is not likely to be going home on the plane with him and his father. Things get dicey and Christian refuses to sign the divorce papers. Anna knows when to back down and agrees to go sightseeing with her husband and
son. While at the Recolita cemetery Oscar falls madly in love with Veronica (Daphne Schilling), the tour guide. One minute Oscar is with his parents, the next he is gone. He checks into a hotel and goes to the cemetery to take the tour every day. Meanwhile the maid (Adriana Mascialino) seduces Christian. When Christian and Juan go one-on-one in a soccer competition at Anna and Juan’s engagement party, Juan gets seriously injured and Christian is forced to find another place to stay. Coincidence leads him to the same hotel where his son has a room. He finds a bar and befriends a curmudgeonly vintner (Miguel Dedovich) who hates the world but actually appreciates Christian for his expertise in wine tasting and his lack of guile. Then things get much worse before they get any better.
“SUPERCLÁSICO is well constructed, pleasantly hard to predict, and very funny at times. At year end I’m sure to remember Adriana Mascialino’s sensual performance as the aging, ever so voluptuous maid; likewise, for Miguel Dedovich who gives the curmudgeon great spirit. Anders W. Berthelsen is perfect as the woebegone Christian. Jamie Morton is excellent as the introverted teen who is simultaneously afraid of life and indifferent towards it. As for Paprika – well, she has little wiggle room compared to the others. She is the core of the film, yet most of the delightful action revolves around her. 4 cats
