Michael says: “Despite the local interest and fascinating subject; the notorious art-theft at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner
Museum, STOLEN proves the adage, ‘there’s not much there there.’ Director Rebecca Dreyfus focuses on famous art-theft detective Harold J. Smith, who could probably have been the focus of a documentary all on his own. She speaks with several art historians who talk about the value of the stolen paintings, not in terms of money, but in cultural worth. She dabbles with the museum’s history, having Blythe Danner and Campbell Scott read letters between Isabella Stewart Gardner and her art dealer. She follows Smith as he explores possible leads and intriguing connections, but the lack of revelation leads to a slightly disappointing finale. 2 ½ cats
