Michael says: “Not being a fan of two fo Christophe Honore’s earlier films, I decided to give SORRY ANGEL a shot because what turned me off in those earlier films was his star and “muse”, Louis Garrel, and the director seems to have moved on from him. Sadly, while SORRY ANGEL appealed to me more than his earlier work that I have seen, I still had a lot of problems with it. Set in early 90’s France, this film is a romance of sorts between two men. Jacques, is a writer around 40-years-old, who seems a bit bitter about life, but finds amusement with a hustler that he sees from time to time. Arthur is a college student in the suburbs with a girlfriend and perchance for occasional sex with men. The two meet, hook-up, and then begin a tentative relationship that revolves around literature and caring. When it becomes clear that the two are falling in love, the question emerges as to why Jacques is reluctant to accept a romance with the younger Arthur. That reason becomes clear through the narrative, and what follows is a somewhat sweet, melancholy love story.

“For me, this film really took a long time to reel me in. The first hour plus kept me at a distance, and I was not enjoying it. But about 2/3 of the way in, I found myself ore involved, even to the point of caring for the characters. Again, as is the case in Honore’s films, the lead, played by Pierre Deladonchamps, was pretty off-putting for me. Whether that was the actor’s fault, or the writing of the character, which could have been quite intentional, I’m not sure. Vincent Lacoste’s Arthur is pretty standard, a pretty, intellectual young student. Denis Podalydès, as Jacques’ best friend, Mathieu, is fun, and the performance that grabbed me the most was a very small role by Sophie Letourneur, who plays Isabelle, another friend of Jacques’ who just happens to be the mother of his son, Lou Lou. Direction is nice, the sad tale washes Paris in blue, but the writing doesn’t quite do it for me, so while it’s a step up from MA MERE and LOVE SONGS for me, it still doesn’t quite do it. 2.5 cats”
Sorry Angel
