Gil & Amanda say: “Bill Maher looks into the beliefs and practices of a number of different organized religions. Shot in a comedic style that is similar to the Morgan Spurlock and Michael Moore, this documentary is entertaining yet seems overambitious and may have benefited from narrowing its focus. Q&A with Larry Charles. 3.5 cats.”
Michael says: “Directed by Larry Charles, who brought us BORAT, and starring comedian Bill Maher, RELIGULOUS purports
to be a documentary about religion. In fact, it is a 101 minute extension of Maher’s recent comic rant meant as a call to arms as those people who are not religious. Watching Maher focus on the more extreme aspects of many world religions (including Catholicism, Judaism, Christianity, Mormonism, Islam and others) and argue with some of their practitioners about some of their odder beliefs is certainly entertaining, but watch out when Maher ramps up the music and starts his own version of preaching. I think it’s supposed to get people riled up; and there was certainly at least one person at last Sunday’s Eye Opener preview of RELIGULOUS that got pretty riled, but most people either enjoyed it because they enjoyed Maher, or thought it was kind of silly. I definitely fell on the latter side; this despite having a pretty total disregard about organized religion myself. Sorry, Bill, this just wasn’t a very good movie, and made Michael Moore’s films seem downright brilliant. 2 cats”
Carolyn says: “I can’t stand when people cut you off while you are trying to make a point simply because they don’t agree with you. 2 cats”
