Michael says: “Leading with an exciting and intriguing cast, Ayo Edeberi, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett and Amber Midthunder, I had high hopes for OPUS, despite the decidedly lukewarm reviews it has been receiving. Edeberi doesn’t disappoint, as a budding journalist in her late 20’s, worried that if she doesn’t get a break on a big story the release of his first album in nearly 30 years. Edeberi along with her boss at the magazine (Bartlett), a TV show hostess (Lewis), an influencer (Stephanie Suganami) a famous paparazzi (Melissa Chambers) and a podcast host with a long-standing grudge against the musician, travel to remote complex in Utah where they discover an entire community of diverse devotees that doesn’t take long to smell like a cult. As the only person who is not convinced that this is a good time, Edeberi naturally becomes the one who starts to sniff out the real goings-on before things turn sideways and we’re into full on horror film mode.

“There’s something of a twist ending that is supposed to be a stunning, dark portent of the future, but just comes across as silly. As the mad genius, Moretti, Malkovitch is slightly off, but manages to capture the eccentric superstar well enough. The music, however is pretty convincing as top notch megapop. It was created by Nile Rogers and The-Dream, and added to the weird, but authenticity of the world we are drawn into. Just wish the movie had been better. 2 1/2 cats (mainly for Ayo — and I love Amber Midthunder too, so glad she got to kick a little ass.)”
