Michael says: ”

NON-FICTION is the latest film by Olivier Assayas, starring the ubiquitous, yet always reliable Juliette Binoche; a talky, smart, amusing story of a publisher, an author and their wives set in the changing world of publishing. Much of the dialog, and there’s a lot of it, revolves around the transition from physical books to e-books, something I have dealt with quite a bit in my library world, and it’s pretty up-to-date and accurate. There’s even an amusing sidebar about public libraries at one point, that is a bit more pessimistic that I see things, but was certainly not completely off the mark. Of course, all this intelligent, thought-provoking conversation conceals the fact that everyone is basically having an affair with someone else in the cast. It’s all oh-so French, you know?

“But Assayas’ write great dialog, and he’s very cheeky with the way he sets these folks in the read world, and references real-life people. Most amusing is when the author asks Selena (Binoche) who plays an actor who has currently wrapped season 3 of a successful cop show, if she will give him Juliette Binoche’s e-mail address to see if she would consider reading the audiobook of his latest novel. It’s a cute moment. This might be too talky for some, and too French for others, but I found it witty and entertaining, and fun to be set in a world I know so well. Binoche is always a delight, but I was most enamored with the fast talking Nora Hamzawi, who played Valerie, the author’s wife, who works for a politician seeking re-election. 4 cats

“P.S. – If you rent this from Amazon, the subtitles gradually get more and more delayed until it’s a little bit difficult to follow in the last 20 minutes of the film.”
