Diane says: “NO BEARS is the latest from Jafar Panahi, the outlawed Iranian director. I’m still wondering about the tone of the film: I took much of it to be hilarious satire, but I’m not sure that it actually is. And there is true tragedy in it. The structure is a major highlight: a film within a film, and figuring out how the two mirror each other is fun to contemplate. Panahi’s alter ego, a director trying to shoot a movie remotely, via laptop, comes across as an honest self-critique.

“The film within the film is kind of tricky to work out, and I didn’t grasp some of the developments. Of course, there’s the “reality” of what’s happening off that set too. Both the actors and the characters they play must deal with issues of oppression by an autocracy and the logistics of fleeing to safety.
“We had a very good discussion and I await the thoughts of our sacrificial second-view-er. 4 cats.
Chris says: “Of all the meta-films Jafar Panahi’s completed in the past decade-plus since his government began enforcing restrictions to prevent him from making more traditional (so to speak) narratives like OFFSIDE, this feels like a summation, a crescendo and hopefully not the final word. 4.5 cats
