Thom says: “Here’s another director that I’ve seen all of his mediocre films: CRANK, CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE, GAMER, & GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE & yet I still went out on a limb to see this film because it looked like it might be fun for the casual horror fan I am. And the idea was sprightly for fans of the macabre. The first half of the film was largely about a dysfunctional family starting their days with squabbles at breakfast as the young boy & teenage girl head off for school, the uptight dad (Cage at his most acerbic) goes to work and the ditzy mom (Blair plays her role well) goes off on errands. Then suddenly all parents (even worldwide) go insane with the only thing on their minds is to kill their children. Soon a gang of angry parents descend on the school expressly to find their own kids and murder them. While slaughter is rampant all around them our two lead kids head back home with a neighbor kid running from his dad. The last 3rd of the film is sort of HOME ALONE meets murder time as the three kids are constantly being stalked by dad & mom who return home as well. When Cage’s parents descend on the home to kill him all Hell breaks loose, with a wacky mayhem of dubious intensity. Since no reason is ever established for this to happen and, moreover; the film loses the focus of the occurrence by internalizing the incidents the exercise is trivialized. Cage can be fun to watch when he plays a character that loses control and he’s on key here but that’s not enough of a reason to go out of your way to see this. 2.5 cats
