Thom says: “After having found FATHER & SON so provocative I decided to delve further into the Sokurov cannon. Hopefully this film will be a great companion piece to DOWNFALL, which I hope to see in the next two weeks. This film is a lurid look at a two-day ‘holiday’ that Hitler (Leonid Mozgovoy) takes at a castle in the Bavarian Alps, along with Eva Braun, Goebbels & his wife Magda, and Martin Bormann. All the parts are played by Russians. The dimestore novel approach taken by Sokurov works brilliantly in capturing the banality of pure evil. Here both Braun & Magda Goebbels come across as insipid and flighty, perhaps not a true portrait, but one that is quite chilling. The film also has a certain mysteriousness about it, especially Hitler’s rant with a priest, and the group’s inept dance on the Alpine peaks. While ostensibly the 2-days are supposed to render the Nazis at play, no one ever looks like they are even remotely having fun. Beautifully lit and photographed I found the film unforgettable. 5 cats“
