Chris says: “As much about the acronym after the slash as the one before it, this slick but stimulating doc tracks both the slain civil rights leader and the J. Edgar Hoover-led government agency throughout the 1960s. As King’s influence grows, the FBI increasingly targets him through wiretapping and surveillance. What emerges is a portrait of a society as divided as today’s, motivated chiefly by fear and racism. My only gripe is that the film introduces itself teasing about the supposedly momentous FBI file on King, only to reveal late in the game that its contents are sealed until at least 2027. 3.5 cats
