Michael says: “Here’s a Guatemalan horror film that features the Central American legend of ‘the wailing woman’ a spirit who returns to avenge an injustice to women, but uses the the actions of a military government that resulted in the genocide of Guatemala’s indigenous people as the real horror that chills the viewers bones. When a general on trial for war crimes and genocide is acquitted, a mob of angry people encamp outside his mansion, leaving his wife, his daughter, his granddaughter, his bodyguard, and the one devoted indigenous housekeeper his only companions while his ill health and the rage of a wronged people to contend with. The arrival of the only other young woman from the village to help out around the house, adds an element of mystery. There’s something a little odd about this young woman, and meanwhile, the General’s daughter, and his wife are starting to question his past actions. It’s only a matter of time before La Llorona comes for her revenge, but not before playing some twisty mind games on the General, and not before revealing the full story of his past crimes, so that when the ultimate vengeance finally falls, the audiences is right there alongside La Llorona. As I mentioned before, the true horrors are in the actions of a military against that country’s indigenous people, something that has been repeated over and over throughout history, all over the world. There are some nice chills and growing dread around LA LLORONA as well, but here’s another film that probably won’t satisfy a hard-core horror fan, but for me, it was just right. 4 cats“
