Thom says: “While the audience at the LGBT Film Festival went wild after the showing of this colorful representation of the early adult life of the legendary James Dean I felt like sneaking away in embarrassment. I’ve seen so many biopics and while sometimes its easy enough accepting the work of a solid actor in channeling the aura of famous stars from the past, even
at their best they rarely rise above caricature. Preston as Dean, while ensuring the role in the looks department (he looks more like a young Patrick Swayze than Dean however) has a meaner look than Dean ever had. The film touches on his fascination with putting out cigarettes on his body, his drug stupors and his wild display of bisexuality but it isn’t just Preston that’s wrong, the casting directors has failed on nearly all of the cast here. The artsy scenes occasionally add depth but too much is imagined here in this failed attempt. 2 cats
