Michael says: “What this feel-good divorce movie lacks in bite, it more than makes up with with heart and good acting. Having gone through something somewhat similar to this, ending a long relationship between people who still care deeply for one another, I found it beautiful grown-up and is immensely aided by strong performances by Will Arnett, and especially, the always terrific Laura Dern.
“It’s the first of Bradley Cooper’s directorial efforts that I liked, and he does a nice job telling this story. Sure, it has a typically Hollywood wrap-up moment, but I felt it was well-earned. Cinematographer Matthew Libatique (who won a Chlotrudis Award for his early work for Darren Aronofsky’s PI) captures both New York City, and the people involved in this story really nicely. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was absorbed and enjoyed this 2-hour plus film. 4 cats”
Diane says: “To my surprise, after repeatedly deciding not to see it, I really liked IS THIS THING ON?
“Alex (Will Arnett) gets into stand-up comedy by accident, after he and his wife (Laura Dern) separate. He finds it therapeutic, not only for the way it makes him reflect on his life, but also for the supportive community he falls into. The screenplay is nuanced, and honest about the ambivalence that can accompany a breakup. Director Bradley Cooper plays Alex’s best friend. Folks who know stand-up will appreciate the supporting cast.
“Dern is fantastic and if she wasn’t so mainstream, I’d give her an acting nom. Wicked good title, too. 4 cats.”
