Michael says: “Also released in 2024, this brief film (61 minutes) focuses on a young aspiring filmmaker who travels with two colleagues (his cinematographer and an actress with whom he has worked before) to a coastal town to create a short film. The three of them share a rented cottage, and spend their time chatting, eating and drinking, on the very limited budget they have. During their stay, they walk around the town, and along the beach, until the young filmmaker encounters a woman picking up trash on the beach and receive the inspiration for his film.

“This profound and gentle film is really quite lovely, but Hong does some something so unusual and fairly off-putting that it detracted from my experience watching it, even though it was also somewhat visually provocative. The entire film is hot without any change of focus; close-up shots are fairly clear, but as the action moves away from the camera, or any long shots are not corrected and appear blurry. I have no idea what Hong chose to shoot the film this way, and I haven’t read anything to explain that. It’s true that as the film progresses, I became less distracted by this visual choice, but I do have to say it was still rather distancing — although not as much as NICKEL BOYS’ use of POV. 3 1/2 cats“
