Thom says: “Director Niccol was responsible for mediocre sci fi fare GATTACA, & S1mOne so I had no reason to expect more from this new ‘in-the-future’ feature but I did. I did like the novel idea that all humankind lived by how much time they had left. All newborns age to 25 when they’re given a year to live but can continually add to or take from the running totals by services rendered or stolen. All the while, no matter your final life span, you always look 25. Justin Timberlake was miscast as an action figure (Will) from the wrong side of the tracks who buys his way into the high rent district after an old-timer (159 years-old, but naturally still looks 25) decides to end it all and gives his thousands of years to Will, after being rescued. There’s some angle about stealing a humongous block of time to disperse among the populous equally in a grand political gesture but none of it made much sense. Will eventually hooks up with a befuddled heiress (Seyfried, stuck with some God-awful wig) whose father (a world  entrepreneur of dubious distinction) is played with a worldly, snide quality by Vincent Kartheiser (‘Mad Men’, ‘Angel’). The best thing about the film is Cillian Murphy’s arch-evil ‘Timekeeper’ who tracks down time miscreants. It was fun to have Kartheiser’s character, his daughter, wife, and mother all look the same age. Dialogue written in another time-zone. The film had a smart look about it. 2.5 cats
