Michael says: “This one surprised me. A less cynical, modernized take on ELECTION crossed with any John Hughes film, HONOR SOCIETY follows overachieving high school senior Honor Rose telling the camera her plans for escaping her small-city life so she doesn’t suffer the crushing disappointment of a life gone nowhere like the adults she views around her, including her parents. Problem is, in her mind, it’s Harvard off bust, and while her skeevy guidance counselor has a possible connection with her dream school, there is competition in the form of three other academic overachievers, the nerd, the misfit, goth/girl, and the do-no-wrong academic scholar. Honor embarks on the inevitable take-down of her competition and in the process learns something. It sounds oh-so predictable, and yes, it’s for the most part, a story we’ve seen before, but there’s a nice, somewhat surprising twist to the resolution, and the writing is sharp and fun. Honor is brought to vivid life by Angourie Rice, who I remember from the TV show, Mare of Easton, and the rest of the cast mostly does a great job in their respective, traditional roles. Not sure if this will garner any noms, but it’s definitely worth watching. 3 1/2 cats“
