Diane says: “Irish film HERSELF, a 2020 Sundance selection, is a pale shadow of last year’s WILD ROSE. Altho main character Sandra’s woes are more external than Jessie Buckley’s were, she’s a single mother with a dream. Having left an abusive husband and working two jobs while living in temporary hotel housing, she decides to build a home for herself and her two little girls. In heartwarming and completely unrealistic ways, friends and strangers come to Sandra’s aid, donating tens of thousands of dollars, building, and celebrating. The girls (Molly McCann and Ruby Rose O’Hara) are excellent, and Sandra’s flashbacks at moments of stress are well-done. Lead Clare Dunn is also the film’s writer. Seen at the EU Showcase, coming soon to Amazon. 2 cats.”
