Thom says: “I’m certainly not Clint Eastwood’s biggest fan (UNFORGIVEN is his only 5 CATS film for me) but he definitely has to be greatly admired for not sticking to one style or genre. Here he goes for a dramatization of the weird or paranormal. George Lonegan (Damon) is a retired psychic that wants to stay retired. But by his brother trying to get him involved in readings again and two separate other events that cross his life he comes full circle to embrace his gift and find love. A French talk host celebrity gets caught in a tsunami (gorgeously filmed) and nearly dies. And one of a set of twins is run over by a car which leaves his twin brother devastated and alone. By weaving the three stories together Eastwood delivers a psychic BABEL that sets a lovely romantic tone but seems misplaced for the genre. It’s not that I disbelieve in the sphere between life and death, nor the possibility of such a mystic gift, I simply don’t want to be lulled to sleep with the proceedings. I’d rather be terrified and taken away from the commonplace with such goings-on. The awful main critic for the San Francisco Chronicle felt that this was Eastwood’s best film since UNFORGIVEN, so obviously he was enraptured. 2 1/2 cats ”
