Brett says: “In a sort of vibe of THE WITCH (one of the best films of 2015/2016), GWEN is the debut feature film of director William McGregor. It’s fits the bill of the recent moniker “elevated horror,” and it feels eerily close to what a Nathaniel Hawthorne short story might look like if put onto film with the same sentiments that the author’s writing presents. The young lead Eleanor Worthington-Cox is brilliant as a teen girl trying to hold her family together while a mining company seeks to prey on their inability to make ends meet take over their home and land for development, all the while her mother takes on a mysterious illness. All of this is set against a backdrop of a missing father in the home that carries with it its own set of unanswered questions for young Gwen. It is an atmospheric piece in which darkness permeates the plot, and the line between the supernatural and real is perfectly balanced.”
