Thom says: “This is an amazingly problematic, thoughtful, but off-putting film. It’s a 4-character study that starts out with a middle-age roly-poly African American salesman, Joe, having an assignation with a white 15-year-old-boy, June. Wendell Pierce, who anyone that loves great television knows from ‘The Wire’ & ‘Treme’ plays Joe & his performance is outstanding, While most people would see him as nothing but a nasty predator, he manages to find some humanity in the fellow. He’s incredibly gentle to the boy who is a willing participant (they met on an Internet site, of course, where neither lied about his age, nonetheless his creepy fascination with the awkward boy, while insightful, is more than off-putting. Meanwhile his agoraphobic wife is left alone at home as his daughter, Abigayle, meets a casual acquaintance for a sex date and goes over to the handsome fellows’ claustrophobic, crowded apartment then scoffs him off after doing the deed. Driving her home they stop at a convenience store where they espy Joe & June. Joe & Abigayle talk to each other a few times through the evening and she thinks her father is away on a convention, so she’s more than shocked when she sees Joe. The film rather drifts off but I have thought about it a lot. It’s so nice having no secrets from those I love. 4 cats
