Bruce says: “Rather like John Sayles who has consistently alternated between acting & writing to acquire enough money to independently produce his own films, Burns has become a reliable B-list actor to finance his directorial projects. But while Sayles has consistently directed high quality films from a variety of genres Burns has always stuck to a more intimate approach placing friends & family types in amusing angst-filled situations. But none of his films, such as THE BROTHERS McMULLEN, SHE’S THE ONE, ASH WEDNESDAY, LOOKING FOR KITTY, THE GROOMSMEN, & others have hit the heights. A dysfunctional Irish-Catholic family have to get together and make nice when papa tries to return to the family, after deserting them years before, when he discovers he has a death sentence from inoperable cancer. Really ho-hum with some hilarious asides, I’ll admit. It was good to see Connie Britton (‘Friday Night Lights’) getting decent roles.” 2 cats”
