Chadd says: “To begin our spate of ‘Rockumentaries’ in 2005, we have this film centered around the Flaming Lips. Though the film presents many good stories about the band, its members, and its members’ exploits, it ultimately is not a satisfying body of work. Compared to a film that has an emotional and thematic trajectory (e.g. DiG!), THE FEARLESS FREAKS seems to be made up solely of alternately amusing, informative, and shocking vignettes. Though the stylization, ‘actors’, and themes of these vignettes are quite sound, this does not add up to a film greater than the sum of these parts. 2.5 cats for the film itself (raise that by a full cat if you are a fan of the band because the insights are still quite excellent if haphazard).”
