Thom says: “Director Newell has proved himself to be an able and durable director without ever establishing an oeuvre. With such varied entries as FOUR WEDDINGS & A FUNERAL, DANCE WITH A STRANGER, THE GOOD FATHER, ENCHANTED APRIL, AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE, DONNIE BRASCO, PUSHING TIN, MONA LISA SMILE, HARRY POTTER & THE GOBLET OF FIRE, LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA, & PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME he’s as capable as he is varied. According to Newell Dickens’ as well-known & popular as Shakespeare in the UK, but he was a real shitheel of a man being cruel & uncaring to his family. I liked Newell showing Pip to be more of a villain than usually portrayed and Bonham Carter has her usual excellent turn as the wicked Miss Havisham & Fiennes is an inspired Magwitch. Grainger impresses as the particularly mean-spirited Estella. But, somehow, even at 128 minutes the story gets short-shrifted.”
