Philip says: “Lynn Whitfield and Samuel L. Jackson star in this Kasi Lemmons melodrama based in Louisiana during the 1950’s. This film would be a perfect double feature paired with LAKAWANNA BLUES. Lemmons channels a bit of Tennessee Williams as she brings an outstanding ensemble cast together in this steamy potboiler. The women are gorgeous. Whitfield’s beauty is even acknowledged via her character several times. Debbi Morgan plays the psychic sister in-law. Obviously ultra-talented, her years on All My Children have given her a good steady paycheck but it sure is nice seeing her stretch her wings here. Diahann Carroll as the Voodoo Witch is crazy good, a late career defining performance. The three child actors are also outstanding, especially Jurnee Smollett in the title role. This one is just as good as I remember from the first time around. A solid 5 cats. Sexy, steamy, sultry, bubbling cauldron of melodrama. Yum!
