Michael says: “Sure it’s got some flaws, but this darkly hilarious romp from TIMEFRAMES director Nacho Vigalondo and star Anne Hathaway was a rollicking good time. After an intriguing prologue featuring a young Korean girl, her mother, and a giant, Godzilla-like kaiju, we are introduced to Gloria (Hathaway) a party girl who is spiraling out of control. At least according to her uptight British boyfriend, Tim. After coming home one morning from an all-night bender, Gloria finds herself dumped, her bags packed, with nowhere to go. She heads back to her blue-collar hometown where she reconnects with a former grade school buddy, Oscar. As she slowly starts to settle into her old family home, she also finds her partying habits are not really changing… until one morning, she sees on e the news an unbelievable report of a giant, Godzilla-like kaiju appearing in Seoul, causing some damage and then mysteriously vanishing. Things become even more perplexing when Gloria discovers she has a bizarre connection with the giant monster.
“The best parts of this film are the outlandish and creative premise, and the fun, refreshing performance by Hathaway. She commands the screen in a fantastic role that also shows evolves into a strong tale of female empowerment. Unfortunately, the rest of the characters suffer from a noticeable lack of character development. Tim is just a cad dressed up in refinement and stylish suit, while Oscar morphs from buddy to villain so unexpectedly and with little to hint this could happen that you think it’s a joke at first. The music, by contrast, was a fantastic blend of ominous scoring reminiscent of a Japanese monster movie, and more contemporary songs that perfectly blend the genres. Despite its flaws, COLOSSAL is huge amount of fun, and I highlyrecommend it. 4 cats“
