Kyle says: “Lower East Side New York cobbler Max Simkin (Adam Sandler) struggles to make ends meet, supporting himself and his aged mother. He rediscovers a stitching machine that has been in his family for many generations and starts using it for shoe repairs, stumbling upon the amazing literal truth of the Native American adage that he can not only walk in another man’s shoes (as long as the shoe size is 10 1/2), but also that he can become that other man. These include a vicious African-American hoodlum, various African-American street denizens and lowlifes of varying ethnicity and physical appearance, his father, a horror movie zombie, a drag queen, an elderly Jew being evicted from his apartment, and handsome Dan Stevens from DOWNTON ABBEY, whose girlfriend invites him into the shower but he can’t join her, because he would have to take off his shoes and change back into Adam Sandler. Before departing in a beautiful well-maintained Cadillac limousine with his father Dustin Hoffman, who has been living next door since he disappeared, disguised as Steve Buscemi in a barber shop, Hoffman reminds his son, ‘It’s a privilege to walk in another man’s shoes, Max, but it’s also a responsibility’.
“THE COBBLER is so ghastly that numerous issues of political correctness raised are actually diminished to meaninglessness by
narrative incoherence and sentimental plot contrivances. The ‘feel good’ aura of this nightmare is so mendacious as to virtually compel sitting through it instead of doing what any sane person would do: Turn it off immediately. I confess to bringing this upon myself by violating one of my cardinal rules of movie viewing: Never under any circumstances watch anything starring Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey. 1 cat
