Thom says: “I don’t have much experience with avant-garde Lynch (daughter of illustrious David) other than her 2008 good drama/mystery SURVEILLANCE, but who can forget the Kim Basinger/BOXING HELENA stink? So, basically I wanted to see this disturbing effort due to Vincent D’Onofrio, one of my many must-see actors and his performance here as an odious, unpleasant, serial killer with no redeeming characteristics whatsoever is brilliant and frightening. He plays a taxi cab driver that easily lures victims into his vehicle, only to overpower them and take them back to his remote house where he tortures them to death. Early on he abducts a mother and her 9-year-old boy. After killing the mother he chains the boy to a post and raises him until he’s a young adult and makes him watch his sociopathic tirades against a variety of victims. Believing the boy to finally being at peace with his surroundings he begins to take him on his nefarious rounds. That the film doesn’t stress the horrific scenes doesn’t make it any less difficult to watch but the approach shows some thought that is rare in the genre. I was rather miffed at the two-part ending but the surprise certainly wasn’t expected. 4 cats”
