Thom says: “I distinctly thought I’d like this film much more than I actually did. I’d be a total idiot to question its sincerity or even its verisimilitude but this film about the early days of the Act-Up agitprop movement in France is actually a trifle dull. There are lots of interesting disruptions of major public events by the group and an endearing romance that develops between two guys (one of them has AIDS) that shines, but most of the film is spent in talk, talk, talk at meetings, in public settings, in private, at parties, endlessly making decisions and arguing with leaders & at each other. For God’s sake, of course, I’m sympathetic, I’ve had to live with H.I.V for more than 30 years but rehashing the past just isn’t my cup of tea. 2 cats“
