Michael says: “After hearing some praise about the new streaming television series, RESERVATION DOGS, which director Harjo executive produced as well as wrote and directed for, I decided to dip into his 2009 film, BARKING WATER, before starting in on the TV show. (What I didn’t remember until just now, is that Harjo is also responsible for the 2007 films FOUR SHEETS TO THE WIND that I enjoyed earlier this year. BARKING WATER is a more mature film than FOUR SHEETS, and is a lovely, low-budget road movie about love, regret, ad mortality. When Frankie gets a pretty dire health prognosis that leaves him with little time left to get his affairs in order, he reached out to his ex-wife, Irene, to help him. He never stopped loving Irene, but he treated her poorly and their marriage crumbled.Yet Irene still feels something for Frankie, and she can’t turn him down when he needs her help. So begins a road trip to get Frankie back home, while stopping in on important folks from his past so that he can put things right. It’s all meaningful and touching, but the real story is the examination of Frankie and Irene’s relationship both in the present and in the past.

“From the two films I’ve seen, death plays strongly into Sterlin Harjo’s storytelling. It certainly is a great motivator, and as in FOUR SHEETS TO THE WIND, he creates a lovely story around something tragic. With Frankie and irene, anyone who feels regret for any actions in the past, will be drawn in and moved by a man trying to make amends before he dies. Richard Ray Whitman and Casey Camp-Horinek are lovely as Frankie and Irene, with Camp-Horinek particularly strong with her taciturn, no-nonsense attitude, but a heart that beats strongly beneath her cool exterior. I’ve enjoyed both of the film of Harjo’s that I’ve seen and I am now eager to check out his new endeavor. 3 1/2 cats
