Diane says: “I guess I was mistaken that AMERICAN FACTORY was eligible, but anyway… This documentary played me like a pinball. It brought out my prejudices, made me question my values, and gave me a lot of angst. Directors Bognar and Reichard start hanging out at the Chinese auto glass factory that takes over where GM left Dayton OH in the lurch. The clashes between Chinese management policies and Chinese workers’ attitudes and American labor law and work ethic are so interesting. Over two or three years, the doc visits the HQ in China, workers’ homes, union meetings, etc. Aside from the occasional pointed music, it seems pretty balanced. And if you watch on Netflix, you get some surprise guests in the follow-up extra. 5 cats“
