Thom says: “It isn’t just the fact that this is the 4th Hollywood incarnation of the same story (1937 with Janet Gaynor & Frederick March, 1954 with Judy Garland & James Mason, 1976 with Barbra Streisand & Kris Kristofferson) that shows the endurance of the tale, but it also portends to the lack of imagination from Hollywood in genera l. Foolishly assuming that a reader might not be acquainted with the theme, here a rising star begins a full-bodied affair with an established superstar that is drinking himself to death. As she continues to soar he falls hard and fast. I do know plenty of folk that loved the film but my objections are solely based on the music that is presented here. Being a lifelong humongous fan of music I love I’m also biased strongly against music I don’t like. The songs are all quasi-stadium-rock quality with no ingenuous touches that make them rise above the very ordinary. And it has nothing to do with my appreciation of Lady Gaga who I thought did an excellent job as an actor in her contributions to the amazing AMERICAN HORROR STORY. I also own 3 of her albums which have a real grasp on the current ‘pop’ world of music. There has been much hoopla over the quality of the production but I lost interest early on. The relationship between Cooper & Gaga has been a lot of fodder for the scandal sheets but it seemed forced to me.”
