Laks says: “After years and years of delaying, I finally got round to watching DARK SONG. In essence, all the horrors of the film melted away and I came away feeling absolved of the terror and uplifted by the surreal salvation. Elegant and powerful, profundity in a class of films that only occasionally aspires to such heights, even though the ingredients for such a story have always been present. Speaking of ingredients, aside from the immaculate art direction and performance, the spectacularly minimalist sound design and music kept me perpetually in terror but also hooked. The director was inspired by the documentary on Crowley and decided to produce the same story but deliberately removed all occult symbols only to retain the spirit, which I thought shined through in the ending. One of those effective, one location, two hander, that is shadowy and subtle allowing for a dive deep into darkest recesses of ontological and existential horror but providing a shocking ladder to elevate the viewer. If I were to pair this film, I would chose HEREDITARY for the sake of transcendence for better or worse.
