Chris says: “Verité doc clandestinely filmed inside an ICU unit in Wuhan, China during the 76-day lockdown earlier this year. Expectedly difficult to watch (especially the heightened panic of the early days) but also genuinely life-affirming. This is an invaluable record of doctors, nurses and volunteers coming together to aid the sick and the dying. If that sounds sentimental, the stripped-down, direct approach prevents it from turning into such. It’s refreshing to see the whole spectrum of what’s going on represented: for every piece of art whimsically drawn on a worker’s hazmat suit, there’s a nurse having to notify a patient’s death to a relative over the phone. Not the best documentary of the year, but the perhaps most essential for obvious reasons. 4.25 cats
