Janet says: “With THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN I expected a DEUCE BIGALOW/AMERICAN PIE type of sensibility with perhaps a few ribald laughs. Instead, I found a cleverly written and well-acted film. The characters are well developed, every setup pays off, and for once the dorky character who falls in love with the pretty girl is approximately her equal in attractiveness and body mass index! Is the world ending? Catherine Keener is a delight—she is always so fresh and contemporary. When I was following ‘Sex and City’ I kept wishing she had the Samantha role played by Kim Cattrall. She would have made it more natural and less Mae West-y. While there is some gross-out humor, this film doesn’t have the usual imbalance of dressed men/stripped women that seems so essential to the target audience for comedies. The word ‘humane’ actually comes to mind, which makes it a nice date movie, if you are not embarrassed by a few sex toys showing up. The only thing I need to be negative about is the very unwieldy product placements. BTW, if you enjoy Paul Rudd in this be sure to rent THE CHATEAU, which Diane and I pushed for Buried Treasure of 2001. 4 cats”
